The Key Benefits

Integrated Wi-Fi - Resulting in 98% of uptime; improved quality of service, active monitoring, optimized customer experience.

Real-time Reporting - Enabling TransLink to now proactively plan maintenance crews ahead of any predicted failures or stoppages. Resulting in reducing delays and improving customer experience.

Dynamic Management & EHS - Direct access to real time data enables TransLink to proactively solve operational inefficiencies, and address key requirements associated with environment, health and safety.

TransLink is Metro Vancouver’s transportation network incorporating public transit, major roads, bridges, and station infrastructure. As part of the cities ‘Climate Action Strategy’, the company was tasked with delivering free and efficient Wi-Fi for all passengers to entice new ridership and a digital asset management strategy that utilised leading edge technology to collect data, and report against key carbon footprint indicators.

The Challenge

With a fleet of 2,200 train carriages and over 400 buses which between them travel almost 40 million miles each year TransLink set an extremely ambitious carbon target in line with city guidance to achieve a 45% reduction of GHG’s by 2030 (over 2010 figures) and to be net zero by 2050.

Understanding ridership patterns, demand management and enticing new passengers onboard their more modern fleet assets are key components of achieving these targets.

We can solve the problem technically speaking but trying to find a way for the client to take value from that is the real difference that Davra delivers.
- Kyle Connor, Global Transportation Development Manager, Cisco

Because the data driven IOT system requires interoperability, integration and connectivity between disparate hardware systems and software components as well as the transit system assets (from trains and buses to legacy infrastructures) a multiplayer ecosystem collaboration was critical to developing and piloting this smart city system. Davra’s experience in other cities and the broader ecosystem they brought to the table were key to TransLink's choice.

The Results

TransLink partnered with Davra, Cisco and KLAS on an innovative solution that brings new levels of connected intelligence to the transit system. The result is a fully integrated Wi-Fi solution that, as well as providing high speed internet access to passengers, drives a wide range of additional operational services.

The rich data and two-way communication systems are also informing related TransLink initiatives, such as predictive maintenance, increased monitoring of environments for security and safety, new services and near real time display of alerts and notifications and most critically the active management of environmental and consumption metrics.
